«Wood Loop – the Runner»

Gewerbemuseum Winterthur 2013

How do you shape wood without breaking it? In order to shape wood innovatively and surprisingly, a variety of processes have been developed which, thanks to computers and state-of-the-art production facilities, are constantly being extended by new technical and design inventions.

The exhibition «WOOD LOOP – auf biegen und brechen» in the Arts & crafts museum in Winterthur invited well-known Swiss designers from the fields of design, architecture, and art, to work on an idea with the unique cutting process (Dukta).

«The Runner» is Annette Douglas’s contribution to the exhibition. The runner runs endlessly up the stairs, bends and makes curves, and rolls out across the finish line. The inspiration for a wooden carpet comes from Annette Douglas‘s core competence, in the textile field.  «Runner carpets» have been known for a long time as reliable along hotel halls or covering the stairs. Next to the wooden runner installation or carpet, Annette Douglas designed a version in textile material, in felt. The technique feels very much like wood-cutting and was produced by Ruckstuhl in Langenthal.
